BREAKING: OILER HERO DONALD HENWOOD DONS THE RICHMOND MAROON

Posted on April 25, 2022April 25, 2022 by andrew.visscher

Jericho Downing, Richmond Daily News
DECEMBER 15, 1902

After a great deal of activity in the grandstand offices above Libby Hill, General Manager Preston Kirby spoke with the Daily News this afternoon to confirm that longtime Oiler hurler Donald Henwood will join the Rifles arsenal for the 1903 campaign.

Donnie is a 9-year veteran of the Legacy Baseball League with a career Earned Run Average of 3.49 and a record of 95 Wins and 125 Losses.  A Pittsburgh native and decade-long mainstay of the Oilers, Henwood will replace Tim Miller in the Rifles rotation.

Donnie joins Richmond, alongside utility infielder Charles Cutforth, for Reserve Roster Infielder Bennie Bell and the hard-smacking First Baseman Adam Rodenbaugh, who earned a .305 Batting Average for the Rifles in 1902 after his acquisition from the Frontier-Champion Saint Louis Beavers.

At thirty-seven years old, General Manager Preston Kirby tells the Times that he believes that Henwood’s stamina and skill will last well beyond the 1902 season and provide a desperately-needed hurling edge against the dastardly rotations of Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Baltimore.
