There are low expectations in Pittsburgh going into the 1908 season, then there always are no matter what the year. 13 seasons of never having a winning record will do that to a ball club, however there is a glimmer of hope. They haven’t even hit the heady heights of a .500 season since there first in 1895 the first year of the Legacy.
Neil Thomas is that glimmer of hope, it’s not his first involvement with the Legacy, he was on a short list for the vacant GM role with the Providence Angels at the start of last season but by all accounts didn’t get the job as he wanted too much control it seems Pittsburgh have given him what the Angels didn’t.
“I’ll say this in front of Mr Colfax so there aren’t any misunderstandings in the future, I answer to Mr Colfax and God, and nobody else. Miss Hershey you on the other hand answer to me and me only.”
Miss Hershey looked over to Mr Colfax who smiled and nodded his agreement with his new GM.
“I’ll leave you to it Mr Thomas, I’m sure you have plenty to do. If there is anything you need just ask”.
“Take a seat Miss Hershey, Mr Colfax is correct we have alot to do, first I want to see our head of scouting in my office first thing tomorrow”.
“I’m not sure he could make it tomorrow, unless he gets a sleeper train, he’s in Texas”.
“Looking for players?”
“No he lives there”.
“Get him on the phone, please.”
“Unusual name Hershey, not a member of the Hershey Chocolate Company family are we?”
“No Mr Thomas, the Tommy Hershey family. Mr Hertzberg is on the line”.
“Mr Hertzberg this is Neil Thomas the new GM of the Pittsburgh Oilers, I find it strange that the head scout of a team in Pittsburgh as based himself in Texas. It is now Tuesday I will give you time to sort your affairs out but I want to see you in my office no later than Monday morning 8am, Miss Hershey will sort your travel arrangements out, until Monday”.
